What equity actually is
Equity is your average share of the pot. Nothing more mysterious than that. If you and one opponent get all-in and the remaining cards are dealt out ten thousand times, equity is the fraction of those ten thousand pots you end up with — wins counted in full, split pots counted as half.
That makes equity a fact, not an opinion. With the cards face up there is one correct number, and you can get it by counting. A flop leaves 990 possible turn-and-river combinations for two known hands; a preflop matchup leaves 1,712,304 five-card boards. Count how many of those you win, divide, and you have your equity. The calculator above does exactly that counting.
Two things equity is not. It is not the same as your chance of winning the pot, because split pots get shared rather than won — that is why the tool shows “wins outright” and “splits the pot” separately. And it is not the money you will actually collect: that depends on whether you get to see the river, which is what equity realisation is about.
Exact counting versus simulation, and why the answer can move
There are two honest ways to answer an equity question, and this tool uses both.
Exact enumeration means dealing every possible remaining board, one after another, and counting the results. It is the whole truth: run it twice and you get the same answer to as many decimal places as you like. It is only practical when the number of boards is manageable. Two known hands preflop is 1.7 million boards — about a tenth of a second — so this page counts those exactly and says so underneath the result.
Monte Carlo simulation means dealing a large random sample of boards instead. You need it as soon as the exact count explodes, which happens quickly: four players preflop, or one player holding a 300-combination range, pushes the number of distinct deals into the billions. This page samples 300,000 runouts in that case, which pins the answer to roughly a quarter of a percentage point. The margin is printed next to each figure, so you always know which kind of answer you are looking at.
That is the first reason two calculators can disagree slightly: one of them sampled. The second reason is suits. Most printed charts quote the average over every suit arrangement of a matchup, but a calculator uses the exact suits you typed. Aces against kings averages 81.95%, yet ace-of-spades ace-of-hearts against king-of-spades king-of-hearts is 82.64% — sharing both suits takes away half of the kings’ flush outs. Neither number is wrong; they answer slightly different questions. If you want the chart number, the matchup table below gives it.

How to use this at the table
You cannot run a calculator mid-hand, and you should not try. The point of a tool like this is to build the handful of reference points you can recall under pressure.
- Learn five numbers, not fifty. Pair over pair is 80/20. A pair against two overcards is 55/45. A flush draw against one pair is about 35/65 on the flop. An open-ender is a little worse. Two overcards against a small pair are about 25/75. Those five cover most all-in decisions.
- Check your read, not your cards. The interesting question is rarely “what is my equity against ace-king” — it is “what is my equity against everything they would play this way”. That is what the vs-range mode is for. Run your hand against a button opening range and then against a 3-bet range; the gap between those two answers is the real information.
- Review after the session, not during. Type in the three hands that bothered you. If your equity was better than you thought, your instinct to fold is the leak. If it was worse, your instinct to call is.

What is a poker equity calculator?
It is a tool that deals out every possible remaining board — or a very large random sample of them — and counts how often each hand wins, loses and splits the pot. The result, your equity, is the share of the pot that hand would win on average if the hand were played to the river with no more betting. This calculator does that maths in your browser for up to four hands, on any board from preflop to the river.
Is this equity calculator free?
Yes. No account, no download, no limit on how many hands you run. Everything happens in your browser — the cards you type never leave your device, because there is no server doing the calculation.
How accurate is it?
When the number of possible runouts is small enough it counts every single one, so the answer is exact and will never change between runs. A preflop heads-up matchup is 1,712,304 runouts and is counted exactly. When you add ranges or extra players the count explodes, so it samples 300,000 random runouts instead. That sample is accurate to roughly a quarter of a percentage point, and the tool prints the margin next to the number.
Why does my answer differ by 0.1% from another calculator?
Two reasons, both harmless. First, simulated answers move a little from run to run because they are based on a random sample. Second, many published charts quote the average over all suit combinations of a matchup, while a calculator uses the exact suits you typed. AA against KK averages 81.95%, but ace-spades ace-hearts against king-spades king-hearts is 82.64%, because sharing both suits kills half of the kings’ flush outs.
Can I calculate equity against a range instead of one hand?
Yes. Switch player 2 to “vs range” and type a range such as JJ+, AQs+, AKo, or tap one of the six preset buttons. The notation understands QQ+, 77-TT, AKs, AKo, AK, A5s+, KQs-K9s and T9s-54s. The readout under the box tells you how many combinations you have selected and what share of all starting hands that is.
Does equity tell me whether to call?
Not on its own. Equity is how often you win; pot odds are the price you are being asked to pay. You call when your equity is higher than the share of the final pot your call represents. Our guide on how to calculate poker odds walks through that comparison with three worked hands.
