Expected Value (EV) in Poker, Explained

Poker EV is the number that lets you judge a decision without waiting to see the cards. It is also the number that explains why your best call of the month lost you the pot.

Expected value (EV) is the average amount a decision wins or loses if you made it over and over in the same spot. Positive EV means the action makes money in the long run; negative EV means it loses money. It is measured in chips or big blinds, and it says nothing about what happens in one hand — a +EV call can and often will lose. EV is how you grade decisions; your balance grades decisions plus luck.

The definition

Start with why it exists. Poker gives you terrible feedback: you make a good decision and lose, you make a bad decision and win, and the cards decide which happens. If you judge your play by outcomes you will learn the wrong lessons for years. EV is the fix. It strips the luck out and asks a different question: if this exact situation happened a thousand times, what would this action average?

Mechanically, EV is a weighted average. Take every possible outcome of an action, multiply each by how often it happens, add them up, and subtract what the action costs. The result is a single number in chips or big blinds. Three ways it gets described:

  • +EV — the action makes money on average. Do it.
  • −EV — the action loses money on average. Don’t.
  • EV loss — how much worse your chosen action was than the best one available.

EV is not the same as equity. Equity is how often your hand wins, as a percentage. EV is how much money an action makes, in big blinds. Equity is one of the ingredients; EV is the dish.

A worked +EV call

All figures in big blinds, 6-max cash, 100 big blind stacks. It is the river. The pot is 20. Your opponent bets 10. You hold a hand that beats all of their bluffs and loses to all of their value bets, and you judge that they are bluffing 40% of the time here.

Two outcomes. If they are bluffing, you win the pot plus their bet: 20 + 10 = 30. If they are not, you lose your call: 10.

EV of calling = (0.40 × 30) − (0.60 × 10) = 12 − 6 = +6 big blinds

So calling averages +6 big blinds. Folding averages exactly 0 — you win nothing and lose nothing more. The difference between the two, 6 big blinds, is what folding would cost you. That is an enormous amount in a 20 big blind pot, and it is why calling down more often against bettors who bluff is one of the fastest improvements available to most players.

Sanity-check it against pot odds. You are calling 10 into a pot that becomes 40, so you need 25% equity. You have 40%. Comfortably above the line, which is the same conclusion in a different currency: pot odds tell you whether a call is +EV, EV tells you by how much.

A worked −EV call

Same pot, same price, different read. Now your opponent is a player who never bluffs this spot — say they are bluffing 15% of the time.

EV of calling = (0.15 × 30) − (0.85 × 10) = 4.5 − 8.5 = −4 big blinds

Calling now averages a loss of 4 big blinds. Folding still averages 0, so folding is the better action by 4 big blinds. Nothing about your hand changed. Nothing about the price changed. The only thing that moved was how often your opponent shows up with a bluff — and it flipped a clear call into a clear fold.

That is the real lesson of EV arithmetic: the decision lives in the estimate, not in the formula. The formula is a minute of practice. Learning what a real opponent’s betting range looks like is the work, and it is what studying solved spots gives you.

EV versus results: why a good call can lose

Go back to the +EV call. You need to win 25% of the time and you win 40% of the time — which means you lose that call 60% of the time. The most likely single outcome of a clearly correct call is losing the pot. If you make that call ten times you will typically lose six of them, and those six will feel like six mistakes. They were one decision, made ten times, and it made you 60 big blinds.

This is the reason experienced players talk about decisions rather than pots, and it is the reason results are a slow teacher. Over a weekend, luck dominates. Over a few hundred thousand hands, EV dominates. The practical rule. After a losing session, do not ask “what went wrong?”. Ask “which of my decisions lost EV?”. Often the answer is none, and sometimes the answer is a winning session full of errors.

What “that mistake cost you 2.4 big blinds” actually means

Trainers, solvers and hand-review tools all report errors this way, and it is routinely misread. Here is the precise meaning.

In any spot, each available action has its own EV. The best action has the highest. If you pick a different one, the gap between them is your EV loss, and that is the number being quoted. Say raising is worth +3.1 big blinds and calling is worth +0.7. Calling is still profitable — but you gave up 2.4 big blinds of average profit by choosing it.

Three consequences worth holding on to:

  • You did not lose 2.4 big blinds in that hand. You may have won the pot. The 2.4 is an average across all the times this situation will occur.
  • A “mistake” can be a profitable action. The label means “not the best available”, not “losing”. Both things can be true at once.
  • Size is what matters, not frequency. Ten errors of 0.1 big blinds are noise. One error of 4 big blinds that you repeat every session is a leak. This is why tracking the average size of your mistakes tells you more than tracking how many you make.

A rough scale for reading these numbers in a 6-max cash game: under 0.3 big blinds is a near-tie where the solver itself mixes between actions; 0.3 to 1 is a real but small error; 1 to 3 is a meaningful leak worth drilling; above 3 is the kind of mistake that defines a losing player, and usually it is a fold that should have been a call or a call that should have been a fold.

Should I try to maximise EV on every hand?

Yes, with one caveat: EV is calculated against an assumption about your opponent. Against a balanced opponent the solver-optimal play is highest EV. Against an opponent with a known, repeated leak, a deliberate adjustment can be higher EV than the solver line.
